NEW MIX: CAR BOOT ADVENTURES – Original Samples Mix for @BreakinBreadLDN Podcast

CBA cover

Back in the mid 90s I got DJ Muro’s King of Diggin’ mixtape and it blew my mind – it was a mix of rare original samples that had been sampled on hip hop records using only original pressings – no compilations, no bootlegs. This was back when there was no internet, no youtube, no whosampled, so the effort put in to get these records was pretty astounding.

What I’ve done is a tribute to Muro’s tapes and others like it from Kon & Amir and Ken Sport where I mix up original samples (and some unused gems) that I’ve found over the years from scouring through car boot sales, charity shops and thrift stores worldwide. Expect to hear the originals from people like MF Doom, Kanye, De La, 9th Wonder and so much more… here it is – Car Boot Adventures aka Oxfam Jams aka Chazza Shop Gold!

Used Volume 7 – Breaks mix by @iamfakeblood

New volume of USED breaks from Fake Blood! In his own words…

Here is the 7th edition in my USED series.
I said I’d stop at 6, but I couldn’t really do that, could I?

As with all the previous volumes, it’s 100% original pressings of old tracks sampled in classic Hip Hop tunes, loaded into Serato (to save them getting wrecked and cos many of them are super rare), and then cut up on 2 copies.

BAd BReaks – A Breaking Bad Mixtape by DJ BobaFatt

For any of you that are still feeling the void left by Breaking Bad finishing this week this might help…

From BobaFett’s Mixcloud:

Consisting of 96% pure BReaking BAd music.

*DO NOT listen to this mix until you’ve watched the whole thing. SPOILERS, bitch!*

2.5 hrs | 110 tracks

At least 96% of these tracks are taken from the soundtrack across the 5 seasons.
The music & samples are not chronological, but I tried to keep the story straight, and split into seasons (half hour each).
So it’s roughly 74% correct overall.

Credit due to Thomas Golubic & team for sourcing/syncing the music throughout the show & Dave Porter for his score.
Thanks to Vince, Bryan, Aaron & all for cooking up pure magic.

Big shout out to my creative consultant on this mix, DJ Inka Hero.
Props to DJ Mo Fingaz for the artwork.

Cosmo Baker’s Roots Picnic 2013 Mix

Another favourite DJ of mine, Cosmo Baker, did this mix for the annual Roots picnic. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“At the 11th Hour it seemed like a good idea to write some sort of introduction to this mix and I gave it some thought as to what I was going to touch upon, but understand this is harder than it may seem. It’s difficult enough to capture everything that this collection of artists is about in the futile medium that’s one single mixtape. In the same regard, much like their entire career it’s almost impossible to pin down what The Roots, and Okayplayer are all about with just words. And that right there just may be the point.

I could take it back to 1992 or 93 when I first met these two dudes Ahmir and Tariq and this could be the story of “Philly dudes done well” or I could talk about the parallels of all or our respective career arcs and all that jazz. Or I could talk about how just some local musicans and DJs from South and West Philly have transformed into global music and cultural ambassadors.

But to me it comes down to one thing – love. The love that one has that makes one do what they do. It’s not for the money of the fame, but for the love of music that is the single reason why we’re in this game. That’s the greatest commonality that we all share, and one of the reasons why Okayplayer is what it is today in 2013. Perhaps it’s something in our mutual Philly history, and its collective cultural fiber; from being in that one time at that one place. I don’t know, but I do know one thing: I grew up with all this, and so when I was asked to contribute this mix, it was more than an honor. It felt like I was coming back home.”
